Current Projects

TS Rebel has a very successful track record in providing coastal and offshore training for young people via its 24 qualified, volunteer instructors and the 8 training vessels that it operates.

Due to our success and the desire to expand and continue to provide new skills and exciting opportunities for young people, we have a need to fund and fulfil various projects. Please take the time to look at our current projects and let us know if you are able to assist or support us in some way.

1) Sea Skills Training & Accommodation Centre

With the existing resources available we have identified further opportunities to complement and enhance our training programmes provided through the establishment of a shore based facility. This facility would enable shore based navigation and general nautical safety training, a full implementation of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, and the addition of day running training for the Royal Yachting Association’s power and sailing courses.

In 2009 we successfully trialled this additional training through the use of temporary loan accommodation; following this success we are seeking to establish our own dedicated sea skills training and accommodation centre. This will allow us to expand and develop additional training opportunities for young people.

A training and accommodation centre is vital because it enables essential training for the induction and advancement of safety at sea for young people. It will complement our extensive existing practical training by:

* Enabling the delivery of safety, navigational and first aid courses

* Extending the practical training on the water by providing overnight accommodation

* Provide facilities for collective staff training for our volunteer instructors throughout the year

* Facilitate uninterrupted training weekends, allowing maximum training benefit to students

    2) Training Boats Refit

    To complement our shore based training, TS Rebel provides a hands-on practical training programme that requires its boats to be continually seaworthy and very safe. This is only achieved by regular inspections and safety checks. Given the corrosive nature of salt water and the stresses and strains placed on various parts of our boats, this is an ongoing and sometimes expensive consequence of providing sea skills training for young people.

    • Re-rigging is necessary every 10 years at a cost of £750 per boat

    • Hull and superstructure refurbishment

      * Repaint and GRP repairs

      * Stanchion rebedding

      * Rubbing strake replacement

  • Replacement sails

    * The Sonatas operate with a suit of 4 sails each

    * Each suit of sails has a 5-year life expectancy

    * The current replacement cost of each suit is in the region of £2,500

  • Safe, whatever the conditions!

    3) Safety Foul Weather Clothing

    TS Rebel has consistently provided offshore practical training places for young people. Our category 2 training boats can operate up to 60 nautical miles from land in various challenging weather conditions. It is essential for the safety and well being of these young trainees that they can be protected from the elements.

    To meet this challenge, TS Rebel needs to maintain a loan pool, in different sizes of suitable good quality foul weather clothing. A well-known manufacturer generously offers a substantial discount (50%) to TS Rebel, but each set of waterproof jacket and trousers costs in the region of £200.

    As the age of trainees range from 12 to 17 years the foul weather protective clothing loan pool needs to be flexible enough to cover a number of different size permutations.
